E911 Service & Limitations (Canada)

E911 Service & Limitations (Canada)

Enhanced 911 (E911) service is designed to provide emergency responders with your location information when a 911 call is placed. While this service is a critical safety feature, it operates differently for VoIP-based services such as SIP trunks and hosted voice solutions compared to traditional landlines.

How E911 Works with VoIP

When you place a 911 call using our SIP trunking or hosted voice services, the call is routed to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) based on the registered service address associated with your phone number. This address is provided to emergency operators to help dispatch assistance.

Important Limitations

Because VoIP services are not tied to a fixed physical line:

  • The location presented to emergency services is based on the registered address, not your real-time physical location.

  • If your device is moved without updating the service address, emergency responders may be dispatched to the wrong location.

  • In some cases, calls may be routed to a national emergency call center rather than directly to a local PSAP, which may require you to verbally confirm your location.

Our E911 Offering

Meteor’s E911 service supports both SIP trunking and hosted voice solutions, providing:

  • Registered address-based routing to emergency services

  • Compliance with Canadian VoIP E911 requirements

  • Support for location updates to ensure accuracy
